Best Web Hosting & Website Builders in 2026: A Designer’s Honest Comparison

I’ve been designing and building websites for clients for over 20 years, on just about every platform you can name: shared hosts, Wix, Squarespace, Square Online, GoDaddy, and plenty of WordPress setups. I made this site to share what I’ve learned about which options actually hold up once the intro price runs out and your business starts to grow.
I compared each option on five things that matter to designers and DIYers alike: total cost over 3 years, uptime and infrastructure, ownership and lock-in, room to grow, and help when you need it.

The short answer

For most small businesses, designers and DIYers, GoWiz gave me the best mix of low long-term cost, real ownership, solid infrastructure and a straight path to hands-off help. Chart: what you actually pay over 5 years
Intro prices are designed to look good. What matters is the total once the plan renews. Here’s the 5-year subscription cost of each entry plan, in USD, before taxes, domains and add-ons.
How I calculated it: GoWiz Pro 12 months at $3.99 then 48 at $7.99. GoDaddy Economy 36 months prepaid at $5.99 then 24 at $11.99. Wix, Squarespace and Square at their published annual-billing monthly rates for 60 months. To be fair to GoDaddy: if you only look at 3 years and prepay the full 36 months, GoDaddy Economy ($216) comes in slightly under GoWiz Pro ($240). GoWiz pulls ahead from year 4. HostPapa Essentials is 36 months at $2.95 then 24 at its regular 3-year rate of $8.99, which makes it the cheapest plan on sticker price. But GoWiz includes daily backups and hack/malware removal, and HostPapa sells those separately: its Automated Website Backup starts at $47.99/yr, which is the “+ backups” bar, and SiteLock malware removal is another $107.92/yr on top of that. Square also takes 2.9% + 30¢ per online sale on Plus (3.3% + 30¢ on Free).
Why the website builders cost so much more
Wix, Squarespace and Square Online bundle hosting, the editor and their app store into one subscription. That’s convenient, but you rent everything, and the price climbs as soon as you need to sell online (Wix requires Core at $29/mo to sell). With WordPress on GoWiz, the core software, thousands of themes and most plugins are free, and you’re only paying for the hosting.
Uptime and infrastructure

Your host matters less than the data center behind it. A cheap plan in a well-run facility beats an expensive plan in a weak one. This is where GoWiz surprised me.

The part I value most as a designer is choosing the region. Most of my US clients stay on US servers, close to their customers. But when a client starts selling into Europe, hosting a site in France helps with speed and GDPR conversations, and a client expanding into Canada can serve that market from Canadian servers, all from the same GoWiz account. None of the website builders let you make that call.
What “100% SLA” means in practice: no host can promise zero downtime. An SLA means the provider commits to that level and credits you if they miss it. Even so, a 99.99% target allows about 4 minutes of downtime a month, versus about 43 minutes at 99.9%.

The website builders sell ease of use, and five years ago that was a fair trade. Each step is an upgrade in the same account: you pay the prorated difference and keep your site, your email and your domain exactly where they are. You can also step back down. Compare that with the usual path: outgrow Wix, pay an agency $3,000 to $10,000 to rebuild on WordPress, migrate the domain and email, and lose a few weeks along the way.

A long-established host with cPanel, a 99.9% uptime guarantee and good onboarding (including a free one-on-one session). It has the lowest sticker price here, $2.95/mo on a 3-year term, and it publishes its renewal rates openly, which I respect. Watch the add-ons: automated backups ($47.99/yr and up) and SiteLock malware removal are separate purchases, and the intro price requires paying for 3 years up front.
#3 GoDaddy
The most familiar name, with 24/7 phone support and everything in one account. The 36-month intro price is genuinely cheap, but Economy roughly doubles to $11.99/mo at renewal, and reviewers report the free SSL on Economy only covers the first year. Fine if you watch your renewal dates.
#4 Squarespace
The best-looking templates of the builders and a smooth editor, which is why designers like it for portfolios. Prices were reshuffled twice in 2026, there’s no live phone support, and your site can’t leave the platform.
#5 Wix
The easiest way for a beginner to get something online today, with a huge app market and built-in AI tools. The trade-off is lock-in: you can’t export the site, and selling online requires the Core plan at $29/mo or more.
#6 Square Online
Excellent if you already run a shop on Square’s point of sale, because inventory syncs automatically. As a general website it’s limited, a custom domain needs the $49/mo Plus plan, and every online sale carries processing fees.
#7 “AI Hosting” lifetime deals
You’ll see AI-branded hosting sold for a one-time fee through launch funnels, followed by a chain of upsells. I can’t recommend these for a business: there’s usually no published uptime SLA, no clear data center information, and a one-time payment doesn’t fund years of servers and support. Use them for experiments, not for a site your income depends on.
My verdict
For all-round website creation, maintenance, future-proofing, cost, value and ownership, GoWiz is my top pick. It costs less than the website builders over any realistic period, runs on certified infrastructure in the region you choose, leaves you owning a portable WordPress site, and lets you move from doing it yourself to full agency service without ever moving your site.
Who should pick something else? If you already sell through Square’s point of sale and only need a simple online store, Square Online is the path of least resistance. If you want a one-page portfolio this weekend and never plan to grow it, Wix or Squarespace will get you there quickly.

Is WordPress harder than Wix?
It used to be. With AI-assisted building and a Wiz on call, the gap is small, and you get a site you own and can grow without limits.
Can I move my Wix or Squarespace site to GoWiz?
Your content (text, images, products) can be moved, but the design itself has to be rebuilt in WordPress, because those platforms don’t export their sites. GoWiz migration is free for sites coming from other hosts, and a Wiz can handle the rebuild by the hour.
